Self Catering Accommodation in Strathcarron, Wester
Ross
Strome Castle stands in a commanding position on a small promontory near Strome
Narrows at the entrance to the main part of Loch Carron.
The castle was built in the 14th century but was blown
up in 1603 during a clan feud between the MacDonalds and the MacKenzies.
The archway in the one remaining wall of the castle frames a
spectacular view to the west, looking towards Plockton and the Cuillins on
the Isle of Skye.
Spectacular sunsets can be seen from this
location.
Close by is the slipway for the old Strome Ferry which
was closed in the 1970's following the opening of the Stromeferry By-Pass
along the south shore of Loch Carron.
However, the
future of the By-Pass is itself now in doubt, as the road passes close under
a steep rock-face which requires constant and expensive maintenance to
protect the road from rock falls.
There have been
discussions about re-instating the crossing at Stromeferry, using a bridge
or causeway, but this in itself would be fraught with difficulties, not
least of which would be the considerable expense.
